In the 1st century BC, King Valagamba sought refuge inside these secluded caves during an invasion of Anuradhapura. After reclaiming his throne 14 years later, he transformed the natural caverns into magnificent shrines as an act of pious gratitude, with subsequent Kandyan kings embellishing the gilding and frescoes.
